What is PAT Testing?

Electrical Portable Appliance Testing

PAT Testing is the process of periodically checking electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use.

This involves both visual inspections and more detailed electrical tests, depending on the type of appliance and its usage. The primary goal of PAT Testing is to prevent electrical accidents such as shocks, fires, or other hazards that can arise from faulty or damaged equipment.

Key Components of PAT Testing

Visual inspection

  • Check for obvious signs of damage, such as frayed cables, cracked plugs, or exposed wires.
  • Ensure that the appliance is being used in accordance with its intended purpose and within its capacity.

Electrical Testing

  • Earth Continuity Test: Ensures there is a continuous path from the appliance’s metal parts to the earth pin of the plug.
  • Insulation Resistance Test: Measures the resistance of the appliance’s insulation to ensure it is adequate to prevent electrical leakage.
  • Polarity Check: Ensures that the live, neutral, and earth wires are connected correctly.
  • Leakage Test: Measures any leakage current to ensure it is within safe limits.

    Labeling and Recording

    • Each tested appliance is labeled with the test date, the next due date, and whether it passed or failed.
    • Detailed records are kept for legal and maintenance purposes.

    Legal and Regulatory Requirements

In commercial or rental properties there can be legal requirements of PAT Testing. The specifics can vary, but the general principle is to ensure electrical safety and comply with health and safety regulations.
